Tap and Ride

Background

Tallinn’s public transport validators form a high-impact system used daily by hundreds of thousands of locals and tourists. However, the legacy devices were technologically outdated, suffering from poor screen legibility and confusing user flows.

User research revealed that passengers consistently struggled with three critical issues: uncertainty about successful ticket purchases, confusion around buying group tickets, and a lack of awareness regarding the need to re-validate upon transferring.

Objective

The goal was to design a clean, highly accessible, and easy-to-read user interface for the new touch-screen validators. The focus was on creating intuitive user flows to provide clear, adequately timed purchase feedback, simplify group ticketing, and clearly communicate the re-validation rule upon boarding.

The primary constraint for this project was an tight deadline. To ensure the best possible outcome despite the rapid pace, field testing on public transport is planned for the next phase. This will allow us to iterate and refine the interface based on real-world passenger behavior.
